Lingram — Privacy Policy

Lingram is a Chrome extension and website that helps you study with YouTube videos. It is part of Kaliwa (kaliwa.dev).

This page describes exactly what data Lingram collects, where it goes, and what we do not do with it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate.

The short version

• The camera never leaves your computer. Frames are analysed on your machine and discarded immediately. No image is uploaded, stored, or shown to anyone — including us.
• We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
• The camera is optional. Everything else works without it.
• Two things you save are shared with other Lingram users: video transcripts and word meanings. Details in "Shared data" below.
• Your profile is shared across all Kaliwa apps, so you enter it once.

What we collect

Account

When you sign in we store your email address and an account identifier. You can sign in with Google, with Apple, or with an email address and password. If you use a password, it is handled by our authentication provider (Supabase) and we never see or store it ourselves.

Profile

The following fields are optional and are entered by you:

• Display name
• Native language and preferred interface language
• Country, state/province, and city/district
• Birth year
• Gender identity (including a free-text option if you prefer to describe it yourself)
• Education level, occupation, and interests

This profile is shared across every Kaliwa app. You fill it in once and other Kaliwa applications read the same record instead of asking again. If you edit it in one app, the change appears in all of them.

Your video lists

Videos you choose to save: the YouTube video ID, title, channel name, thumbnail URL, duration, publish date, and any category, note, or favourite mark you add.

We do not record your general YouTube browsing. Only videos you deliberately add are stored.

Watch and focus records

For videos in your list, we record when you watched, for how long, how much of that time you were focused, how many times your attention broke, and why it broke (for example: you switched to another tab, another window, another application, or you looked away from the screen).

From this we calculate a focus score from 0 to 100.

Words and phrases

Words and phrases you mark while watching, along with the source language and your native language.

Preferences

Interface theme, toolbar position and visibility, focus sensitivity level, pause behaviour, chosen interface language, and time zone.

Stored on your own computer

The extension keeps three things in local browser storage: your sign-in session token, a cached copy of the interface translations, and your auto-play state. Together these are under 100 KB. They are removed when you sign out or uninstall the extension.

The camera

Focus tracking is optional and off until you enable it and grant camera permission.

When it is on:

• The camera and the face-detection model run inside the extension's own isolated page, not inside YouTube. Camera permission is granted to the extension, never to youtube.com.
• Each frame is analysed and then discarded. Frames are never written to disk, never sent to a server, and never made available to any web page.
• The only things that leave that isolated page are numbers: a head angle, a gaze offset, a focused/distracted flag, and a score from 0 to 100.
• The face-detection model is bundled inside the extension and runs entirely on your computer. It needs no internet connection and downloads no code.

We never receive, store, or transmit any image of you. What reaches our servers is the aggregated result: how long you were focused, and when your attention broke.

You can revoke camera permission at any time in Chrome's settings, or turn the feature off inside the extension. Everything else keeps working.

Shared data — please read this

Two kinds of data are shared between Lingram users. Neither identifies you, but you should know it happens.

Video transcripts

When you open the transcript for a video, the extension fetches the captions YouTube provides and stores a copy on our servers, keyed by the YouTube video ID. The next person who opens that video is served the stored copy instead of fetching it again.

This means a transcript you caused to be stored may be shown to other users. The stored record contains the caption text and the language — it does not contain your identity, and it is not linked to your account.

Word and phrase meanings

Meanings are generated once per word-and-language pair and stored in a shared dictionary. If you look up a word that someone else already looked up, you get the existing meaning and no new processing happens. Your own list of marked words remains private to you; only the meanings are shared.

Classrooms (Pro)

If you join a classroom, the teacher or parent who owns that classroom can see your watch and focus reports for the videos in that classroom: how much you watched, your focus score, and completion status.

They cannot see anything outside that classroom — not your other videos, not your marked words, and not your profile beyond your display name.

You are only in a classroom if you accept an invitation.

Who else processes your data

Supabase — our database and authentication provider. It stores everything described above.

AI processing — to generate word meanings and to add punctuation to raw transcripts, we send text to an AI provider. Currently this is DeepSeek; we also have Anthropic configured and may use it. What is sent:

• For word meanings: the word or phrase, the sentence it appeared in, the source language, and your native language.
• For punctuation: the transcript text of the video.

Your name, email, account identifier, and profile are not sent to AI providers.

Purchases are handled at kaliwa.dev. The extension contains no payment flow and never sees payment details.

We do not use analytics or advertising services, and we do not embed third-party trackers.

What we do not do

• We do not sell or rent your data.
• We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.
• We do not use your data to assess creditworthiness or for lending.
• We do not read pages other than YouTube. The extension requests access to youtube.com and to our own servers, and to nothing else.
• We do not record your keystrokes, mouse movements, or general browsing history.

Where your data is stored

On Supabase infrastructure. Access is restricted by row-level security rules so that each account can read and write only its own records — with the two documented exceptions above (shared transcripts and shared meanings), which contain no personal data.

Keeping and deleting your data

Your records are kept while your account exists.

You can delete individual items yourself at any time: remove a video from your list, remove a marked word, or clear a profile field.

To delete your account and everything associated with it, write to us at the address below. When an account is deleted, its profile, video lists, marked words, watch records, and preferences are removed. Shared transcripts and shared meanings remain, because they are not linked to any account and other users depend on them.

Uninstalling the extension removes everything stored on your computer, but does not delete your server-side account.

Your rights

You can ask us what data we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask for corrections, or ask for deletion. Write to the address below and we will respond.

Children

Lingram is not directed at children under 13. If you are a teacher or parent using classroom features with children, you are responsible for obtaining any consent required where you live.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
